When Thompson was 14 years old, his family moved to Ladera Ranch, California, and in 2008 he graduated from Santa Margarita Catholic High School in Rancho Santa Margarita.

Thompson was named to the All-Area Second Team and Orange County Third Team in his junior season.

During his rookie season at Washington State University, Thompson started every one of the 33 games under Tony Bennett.
