England won by 28 points
Player of the Match
Ollie Pope
Rohit Sharma: It’s hard to say what went wrong. With a 190-point difference, I thought we were right in front. The exceptional batting is one of the best I have seen from an overseas batsman in Indian conditions. We bowled in the appropriate area. The bowlers executed the plan really well. I have to take my hat off to Pope and say “well done.” Overall, it was a failure for the team. We didn’t bat well enough. I wanted them to take the game to the fifth day. The underclass fought really well there. It takes a lot of courage, but I didn’t think of it.

Tom Hartley’s 7/62 was the best by an English spinner on his Test debut after the war (after 1945) and Tom Hartley’s nine wickets in the match were the best by Robert Berry against the West Indies in Manchester in 1950. This is the highest number since September 116. : I can’t believe it, to be honest, I’ll understand after a while. I don’t think I got much help, but I had to stay calm. It was a difficult affair (first innings bowling attempt), it didn’t turn as much as I thought it would, and I spoke to Stokes, McCullum and the team’s management. The dressing room has a great atmosphere, it’s a great dressing room, one of the best dressing rooms. This is just Stokes’ way, just throwing it on the surface and we’re in the lead today. It always helps to score a few runs (in two at-bats) and it also helped me get to know the pitches better. To be honest, I can’t believe it. I didn’t have to bowl as fast as I thought (in the first innings). After seeing Ash and Jadeja, I knew it would take some time. Change the length and trajectory on your second bowling.

17:32 local time, 12:02 GMT, 17:32 UT: Gabba, West Indies, Hyderabad, England – Two famous away Test wins on the same day. Shamar Joseph opted for seven furs to upset Australia’s Down Under and here in India, debutant Tom Hartley rounded out the Indians with a seven fur victory. It was an incredible come-from-behind victory for England. Their spinners were completely overwhelmed by the opposition in the first innings. And despite choosing three spinners up front, the most talented bowler was Joe Root. Almost all the Indian batsmen died trying to score, but the hosts still managed to grab a lead of 190 runs. India was in charge. And most visiting teams usually surrender. Not England/Buzz Ball. The opening pitcher hit as well as he did in the first inning, but his batting average dropped to 163/5 (effectively minus-27 in five innings). At this point, I had a strong goal for the third day. Once again England/Buzz Ball did not give up. England vice-captain Ollie Pope swept and reversed, leaving the Indian spinners unsettled. He was dropped twice after reaching the age of 100 and made the Indians pay for it. Despite some luck, England’s number three fought bravely throughout the innings. He formed three key partnerships with Foakes, Rehan Ahmed and Hartley to give England a glimmer of hope and ultimately victory.
