With one of the most tumultuous finishes to a cricket match in the history of the sport, Tasmania has won back-to-back WNCL championships.
South Australia needed only four runs to advance to the final at Hobart’s Blundstone Arena, which was hampered by rain.
Still, what happened next was a terrible combination of rushed batting, good fielding, and a bit of luck that caused the Scorpions to collapse and lose five wickets in as many balls. They ended up losing the championship by one run.
When the last over was up for Sarah Coyte to bowl, Annie O’Neill tried to end the game by dancing down the wicket, but she was clean bowled.
We always had a chance if I did what I wanted to do, so I’m delighted it worked out.
I was actually rather composed. Before I started, I spoke with [Tasmania coach] Jude Coleman and was quite clear about where I was going to bowl.
It was a stop-start game where we had to constantly keep an eye on Duckworth-Lewis. The game fluctuated greatly.
Without a doubt, this is the best game I’ve ever played. A game like that cannot be duplicated.
Elyse Villani’s century, along with solid efforts from Naomi Stalenberg and Lizelle Lee, helped the Scorpions bat first and set the Tigers a target of 265 runs for victory from their 50 overs.
The Tigers’ aim was reduced to 242 from 47 overs due to two brief weather delays.
